As the dark wraps around me in my too stuffy pajamas, I see demons lingering just out of sight.
I know why they're here. They answer their summons, even if it seemed unexpected. They stare at me, curled up in my covers, and glide through the shadows, never staying still.
They wait.
Some cock their heads to the side in curiosity, blood dripping onto the hardwood floor of my bedroom.
Some growl or click and reach out to touch me, but stop right before their rotting hands can finger my skin.
Others still stretch out wings made or feathers and death, displaying their dark beauty, and await my reaction.
Most remain silent, still waiting just out of sight.
They expected their summoner to welcome them with open arms, to embrace the blood, rot, and ash at once and to dream of them without fear. They never expected someone like me; one who cowered in fear at the very sight of them.
Then, from my bed, other monstrosities emerge and I show no fear towards them. They realize what I am; someone who needs to get used to the coppery smell of blood and the mournful wailing. I have accepted them already, just as I will accept the others who came here tonight. But, as all things do, it will take time.
I take a deep breath and close my eyes. My old demons begin to fade; they are no longer something I need to fear. The others still stare at me with bloodshot eyes.
One moves, a winged beast with dulled golden eyes. Its breath tickles my face as it sidles up next to me. The mattress groans slightly with its weight (or was that one of the others?) and I wrap my arms around its neck. I look past it and see the others. I feel my mouth turn up into a small smile, although I'm beginning to tremble, and I whisper into the shadows.
"Don't worry. You're next."
